Rock salt wounds and harbour tunes, A man'll get lost once in a blue moon, A volume of country-i never knew til now, From the far-wide down to the village town, And we thought those were golden times, Hiding our hearts under whisky and wine, We didn't drink to find another place, But to say the thing we wouldn’t otherwise say, Under an endless sky, City low, mountain high, Under an endless sky, We woke up and had to leave, Her body an island on the linen seas, And we didn't talk too much that drive, Just sat and watched as the forest flew by, Honey I can see you never wanted for me, Your gated yard and your windows boarded, Got me to wondering what makes a man real, The truth he shares or the one he conceals, Under an endless sky, City low, mountain high, Under an endless sky, Under an endless sky, City low, mountain high, Under an endless sky.

Ain’t it funny how flying high, Can train the focus of a caffeine eye, Your perspective shifts to a realist glitch, In the otherwise rushing river of your day to day blues, Oh don’t let your sorry cast a shadow on you, Why worry about rocking the boat, When the river’s just a cut in the throat, Of a land that’s just a crumpled coat, That can’t quite cover the whole of the linoleum blue, No don’t let your sorrow cast a shadow on you, And it takes a plane ride home, To settle out my soul, To offer me a driver’s seat, I never would’ve known, Oh how can you know if you’ve never been shown, What’s good about a mutual past, When the peacetime comes as a lapse, Between the hollowed out and crooked mask, When your love is on the edge of collapse, You’ll only find a way through, If you leave the worry out of your head, And free the thought of loving instead, A mind at peace is better at least, Than what ever it was to have cause to make my baby blue, Oh don’t let your sorrow cast a shadow on you, And it takes a plane ride home, To settle out my soul, To offer me a driver’s seat, I never would’ve known, Oh how can you know if you’ve never been shown, No don’t let your sorrow cast a shadow on you.

Honey I know you’re hanging your heart on the line, There’s only so much you can take of being left behind, To squander your love and just cover it up with a sigh, Until every last one of your heartstrings slips and unties, Cry honey, cry honey, cry, One last time, To prop up a seasonal love with deciduous smiles, To last every winter just praying a spring will arrive, Words will cut like a knife and dress up the wound, But unseen scars are just daytime stars, To come out with the dark again bright as the moon, I don’t see what we have left to lose, So cut me loose, A thousand tears come and gone before, With every wave my love slips overboard, Without that ballast I’m sinking down faster, How cruel and callous are these last words, No love’s left that hasn’t been found, For better or worse we’re heartache bound, The last time around, The last time around.

Take hold of me, Don’t let me go, I’m high on the wind, You’re too low to fall, A mind the once thought, It didn’t want to grow up, A heart that once sought, A true kind of love, I’ve been singing sad songs for too long, All the way hoping to move along, But you’re too far gone, Call me all night, I’m a roadside motel, Without a vacancy sign, I’m an easy sell, Would I ever know your face, If we again meet, I’ll be the man in black, With his heart on his sleeve,, I’ve been singing sad songs for too long, All the way hoping to move along, But you’re too far gone,

I may be poor, but I ain't as suffering as you dear, You try on a smile, but I can see right through you dear, He doesn't like your song, so you ask him what is wrong, The page he said took an age to be read, The words had been bled too long, So if you find yourself alone tonight, The stars they might align just right, And you'll see, For the first time, you'll see me. If you're stuck on the edge of a rock in the south-side seas alone, I'll be the one to pry you off and baby we'll make a new home, Like a blade of grass grown long you get cut down by the throngs, But you grow back again and taller than ever, You're far too clever and strong, So if you find yourself alone tonight, The stars they might align just right, And you'll see, For the first time, you'll see me. And you'll see, For the first time, you'll see me. And oh how the clouds danced round, And found ways to obscure your view, And oh how the sun went down, Below the ground beneath your shoes, And seeing me was impossible, Until the the sun came a-breaking through, So if you find yourself alone tonight, The stars they might align just right, And you'll see, For the first time, you'll see me. And you'll see, For the first time, you'll see me.

Break away, do you have to roam to know your place Wait please wait, if you’re going to do I have to wait Overboard I would be hauled with my love of course, Separate ways our winds were diverging long before we took sail, There’s a cold wind blowing all the time, Not from east or west or any other kind, There’s a cold wind blowing all the time, Home one day, bringing back a different kind of pain, I could gauge all in all my love was not the same, All your sand had shifted, all your winds had changed, Your love for me was lifted, subtle as a crane, My love had returned or so they say, But tonight I’ll make my bed in the very same cold ocean waves, That took you away, There’s a cold wind blowing all the time, And it settles my heart and steadies my mind, There’s a cold wind blowing all the time, There’s a cold wind blowing all the time.

There’s a rain falling down on the rooves uptown, It’s gonna flood, man that creek’s gonna rise, But that ain’t what’s got me climbing above the screams and the sirens, It’s all for you I make my way to the sky, To the sky. And there’s a river flowing over all the gold I want to show her, I’m gonna work ‘til my hands start to bleed, But If she don’t need a working man I’m-a do the best I can, To let that river wash me down to the sea, To the sea, Angels walk beside me, All the while I was blind, I don’t know the difference, Between the dead and the dying, But she must be one, If there’s avalanches falling because I ain’t stopped a-calling, You must’ve heard, I was howling out so loud, All my calls became the snow, became the rain and the river flow, I guess you must have been already underground, Underground.

There are mountaintops that always stay above the clouds and only see the sun, And no shroud can ever cover them no matter how dark or how long, If only I could train my mind to be above the weather at all times, But then again the darker days were the very thing that started me to climb, If you can fly up through a sea of clouds and come out on a heaven on high, Could there be another tier beyond security and fear for which to strive, Oh to take a shot at something it’s better than just a-waiting ‘round to die, You may not see it from below when you’re a lost bird, honey open up your eyes, Why do I waste my time in thinking, When my mind’s already made up, My head has chained my heart to pain, Soon the open door will shut, So be my love and wish me goodbye and good luck, I take a shot at optimism, point my compass straight up to the sky, But holding doubt and indecision I feel my heart’s too heavy to ever fly, So I’ll write another ballad as if to shed the ballast with a sigh, But while I’m weighted down commiseration songs are all that I can write. Why do I waste my time in thinking, When my mind’s already made up, My head has chained my heart to pain, Soon the open door will shut, So be my love and wish me goodbye and good luck, Why do I waste my time in thinking, When my mind’s already made up, My head has chained my heart to pain, Soon the open door will shut, So be my love and wish me goodbye and good luck, Be my love and wish me goodbye, Be my love and wish me goodbye and good luck.

I awoke after the long haul flight, I was felling awful tired, I was alone, My head was ringing like a bell, I was spinning like a compass lost its pole, There’s no electromagnetism, Or mathematical algorhythm I don’t know, But your heart’s too hard to figure out, I guess I just went south to put on a show, I spent the first days walking halways, Pretending you and I had been always doomed, A dissertation in denial, A thesis on the thoughts of a love assumed, I did not care my fuel had run out, Or all my freeze-dried rations had been consumed, I did not hear my shelter fall down, Because all I ever thought about was you, Now the antarctic winter has got me freezing, A blast of white done stopped my breathing air, Your distance and my disposition, Got me thinking I don’t even care, I can’t return to see you babe, But it was enough just once to have touched your hair, To have gone away without telling you these things, Well that much I suppose, it isn’t fair, So if you find another, Just make sure he’s not a wanderer of lands, Or if you’ve changed and are indeed now, One who lives more free from health and plans, You don’t have to recall my name, Or separate my face from another mans, But honey can you not forget, Just what it was to once have held my hand, I want to run like the bulls do, Scream out at the full moon in the sky, Take out all my overcoats, And trade them for the arms of a loving kind, Up above and down below, I searched but baby I could never find, A way to take these simple words down to the page, And out of my mind. A way to take these simple words down to the page, And out of my mind.

Your sweetness and song has all up and gone, So what will you bring to me now, When illness and sin have been tossed to the wind, Will you think that its love you have found, He’s a rocking horse man who gives all he has, To his porcelain baby doll til he’s dead, When our bodies were frozen we drank coffee black as oil, And we toiled for the roof overhead. The old charcoal kid could just not get rid, Of his well hidden villagetown frown, Like a run-around Jill who just can’t stay still, He’s now left the hills for the town. Pleasure and pain can be quite the same, When your aim is to live and die young, While you have flown away both our bodies still lay, Under the very same sun. Flying in circles up in the sky, Falling deeper in love but more out of my mind, And I am scared of dying without living a life, When all is not healed in time.

Dear Louise you were only eighteen, Scared of teachers, cops and your own dreams, Thought you had the summer off to dance, Share the sun with friends and maybe a romance, But six dollars thirty five an hour, A head full of car alarms, a handful of flour, All it takes is one well-spoken word, And all that breaks is my sweet little girl, And they took you for a fool, And you let them didn’t you, Back when the town hall bell would ring, My front door was open, I hadn’t seen a thing, The sweetest fruit eventually turns sour, Middle America can wilt the strongest flour, And they took you for a fool, And you let them didn’t you, And I don’t know you now, Where are you now, my Louise,

You only get what you give and what I give is never nearly enough, I never know which choices to take, the easy or the tough, I never know what to get out of innocence and being in love, As soon as a tell anyone else these thoughts they separate into dust, You’ve got to hold on, You gotta try to hold on, You might find blue sky, Somewhere a blue sky, I’ll take the struggle to be great over the ease of giving up, I’d rather struggle to be great than to wait and never get there once, If you scrape the ceiling at least you feel the heat of the sun, And if you scrape that ceiling man it better be enough, You’ve got to hold on, You gotta try to hold on, You might find blue sky, Somewhere a blue sky, If you never get near to skies flying blue and clear, Just take comfort my dear in the knowing they’re out there, When you escape to the desert honey, you know what you’re gonna hear, Just one great silence, it’ll shout in your ear, You’ve got to hold on, You gotta try to hold on, You might find blue sky, Somewhere a blue sky, You’ve got to hold on, You gotta try to hold on, You might find blue sky, Somewhere a blue sky.

about

Miles Calder is a singer-songwriter from New Zealand with an expressive voice and raw heartfelt songs. Nestled somewhere between Ryan Adams, Bob Dylan and 70s Neil Young, Miles Calder & The Rumours’ brand of atmospheric Americana dresses Calder’s songs with striving harmonies and earthy tones.

The band's debut EP 'The Crossing Over' was nominated for the 2014 NZ Taite Music Prize (Best Album) and RIANZ Best Country Album and Calder received honorable mentions for the singles ‘The Crossing Over’ and ‘The Avenue’ in both the International Songwriting Competition and The John Lennon Songwriting Contest.

The band have since played numerous New Zealand festivals and supported Shakey Graves (USA), M. Ward (USA) and Fly My Pretties (NZ).

Miles Calder & The Rumours now present their debut album. Recorded over a two-year period, which saw Calder spend a year living away in New York, and his debut European solo tour, this album shows a progression to a much deeper and more diverse sound, with Calder’s lyrics pondering distance and disposition

The fittingly self-titled debut is a picture of the band after four years playing together. A collection of strong songs at its core, the album draws on a rich palette of vintage instruments and vocal harmonies to create beautiful arrangements inspired by classic folk-rock albums of the early 70s.

Miles Calder & The Rumours are touring the album around New Zealand throughout October, November and December.
