about

This song is a moment of realisation. I wrote it as soon as I got home after a weird situation in a cafe where I had been trying to hang out with people I thought were cool, but was more just being humiliated. Then finally you realise what the hell is the point trying to fit in with people that don't make you feel good.

I had the song's revolving chords and melody, which Nick George (drums) and Steve Moodie (bass) made into such a hypnotic rhythm. Chris Armour then took it upon himself to record the beautiful multitude of electric guitar layers to swirl you around in all the social anxiety. My guitar solo was a late addition. It felt like it needed that moment of release and agency.

lyrics

Man what’s wrong with you?
Are we back at school?
Man what’s wrong with you?
You’re just a bully,

I shouldn’t hang around,
Hang around with you,
You’re so bad, bad for me,

You try to make a fool,
Make a fool of me,
And I make it so,
easy it seems,

I shouldn’t hang around,
Hang around with you,
You’re so bad, bad, bad for me,

And I don’t know what to say,
When you’re right there behind me,
And I just want to leave,
But I’m desperate for the company,

And I know I should,
Have more self esteem,
But it’s harder for,
All your chiseling,

I shouldn’t hang around,
Hang around with you,
You’re so bad, bad for me,
You’re so bad, bad, bad for me.

about

Miles Calder Wellington, New Zealand

Singer/songwriter Miles Calder delivers cutting lyrics with an expressive voice. A few years since the last outings with former backing band The Rumours, Miles has emerged with a revived sound, fresh songs and a new band. His new self-reflective songs move from understated folk-rock to swirling psychedelia, evoking early 70s Lennon as much as contemporaries like Kevin Morby or Father John Misty. ... more
